What is the first memory you have of reading and writing? Is there any specific story that would come to mind if someone were to ask you what book influenced you the most? For me, that answer is easy; the most essential book series that I have read and has had the most impact on my life is the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”
These books were my absolute favorite to read when I was in elementary and beginning my own middle school experience. I owned every book the author wrote for the series and would buy the new books as soon as they were released. It wasn’t only the goofy storyline, and the some-what lame dad jokes that I mainly enjoyed. Still, it was also the simple artistic doodles that the author incorporated into the story. The pictures are what I remember the most, I can recall most of the main events of the storyline, however the drawings combined with the text brought these books to life. I can still clearly picture the illustrations of the main charters brothers, Manny and Rodrick, who were drawn in a hilarious and caricature fashion. What also appealed to me was how the whole book, even the cover, was purposely made to look like a real diary that a middle schooler may have.
This book was more than just a fun read when I was younger. It ultimately shaped my composition style and tone that I continue to use in my literacy. It helps boost my creativity and incorporate vivid imagery descriptions in my essays and projects. These novels also showed me that not every book has to be serious and appeal to an adult audience. However, it showed me that even simple stories that involve everyday life, as well as childhood experiences, can be used to entertain and appeal to the audience reading. This novel also helped me learn a few things about myself. Not only did I find out I like to draw from these stories, but I learned that I prefer writing in a satirical and more relaxed style. These novels also show how I prefer a happy and fun storyline rather than a dark, ominous, and serious one. Personally, I love to read satirical pieces because of how they can parody almost anything you can imagine sarcastically. I also enjoy the use of images because it helps give a visual aid and more context of what is occurring within the writing.
Overall these books helped me learn the style of writing I prefer, the genre, and many other personal values I have today. In conclusion, the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series is the most notable and essential books that helped shape my future and become the writer I am today.
